Important Siding Terms Homeowners Should Know

Your siding is a core component of your home. It completes the look of your home’s exterior while improving its energy efficiency. This is why it’s important to know the details about your siding system so that you can better understand your future siding replacement projects.

Here are the important siding terms each homeowner needs to know.

  • Backerboard: This is a flat material used on the home’s façade. It’s applied between the studs or siding, or over an existing wall surface so that the vinyl siding is installed evenly.
  • Channel: The channel is the accessory trim where your siding is installed. The channels also refer to the trim itself and are named based on the letters that they look like, such as J-channel or F-channel.
  • Face-nailing: Face-nailing is when your siding contractor is fastening directly onto the exterior side of the panel. This is different compared to using the nail hem slot, which isn’t usually done during siding installation.
  • Face: The face refers to the side of your siding or a soffit panel that is showing outwards when the panels are installed.
  • Lap: This refers to overlapping the ends of two siding panels or accessories to accommodate the future contraction or expansion of the vinyl siding.
  • Course: A siding course refers to a single row of siding that runs the length of an exterior wall. This is why there are multiple “courses” of siding used to fill up your front unit.
