Beware of These 4 Common Roofing Scams

There are peak and off-peak seasons for roofing, but whatever the season, if an area is hit by a strong and destructive weather event, you can be sure that every local roofing contractor has their hands full. While you’re busy trying to find someone to fix your leaking roof, someone might approach you offering roofing services.

Note that every roofer in your area is busy at this point, so how come these “roofers” are roaming your neighborhood offering their services? It’s very possible that you’re talking to a storm chaser. Storm chasers are fly-by-night operators who are after your money. You can expect to be scammed if you agree to work with them. The best way to deal with them is to say thanks but no thanks. Otherwise, here are some of the scams you can expect:

Inadequate Repair

Dishonest or inexperienced roofers can make mistakes when repairing your roof. They will make do with what works at the moment, but you’ll learn that you’ve been scammed when your roof doesn’t perform as well as expected, particularly during poor weather.

Unnecessary Repairs or Replacement

If there are instances when unscrupulous roofers under-repair a roof, there are also moments when they do too much. But they don’t do this because they want to help you. They do it because they want you to pay them for repairs your roof doesn’t need. A reputable roofing repair contractor will try to help you avoid unnecessary costs, so they will do only what’s needed. If your roof needs additional repairs or a replacement, honest roofers will discuss this with you in detail so you’re not in the dark. They might even help you plan the budget.

Cheap Estimate, Expensive Payment

When a roofer does unnecessary repairs, they usually don’t warn you about it. They’ll give you an estimate which is low and thus very attractive. But when it comes time to pay, they will charge you much more than what you agreed upon in the beginning. If the offer is too good to be true, it usually is.

The Disappearing Act

Some storm chasers would go through the motions of fixing your roof, then when you’ve paid them, they would leave in haste. By the time you realize your roof isn’t fixed at all or that the roofer applied temporary repairs at best, they’re long gone – no address, no phone number and no refunds.

Whether you need new construction builders or roof repair and replacement specialists, always go local. Local roofers care about their reputation in their own community, and they actually want to take care of you. If anything goes wrong, an honest local roofer is available to fix the problem. You can visit the person’s office or call the office’s local number. This is not something you can expect from people you don’t even know.
