Windows and What They Mean to You

If you are revamping your exterior, or are thinking about replacing your windows, then you are going to have to choose what kind of windows you would like. Sounds easy right? Well, you might be surprised at how many options there are. There are a ton of different kinds of windows, so we have put together a guide on some of the more common types.

Single Hung Windows

Single Hung windows are some of the most common windows on the market. The bottom pane of the window can be moved up or down, but there is only one option for opening the window, this is why they are known as single hung.

Double Hung Windows

The double hung windows can be opened using either the top or the bottom pane, thus the name double hung windows.

Casement/Hinged Windows

Casement windows have a hinge which swings open. These windows can be more energy efficient as there is one large pane of glass so there are fewer places for air to escape.

Egress Windows

If there is a bedroom in your basement, chances are you will need an egress window. Essentially what they do is allow any occupants an escape route out of the basement.

Garden Windows

A garden window is a miniature bay window that can be used to grow plants indoors. The garden window allows a lot of natural light and is perfect for an indoor herb garden.

Awning Windows

Awning windows are hinged at the top and swing open upwards. These are popular because they can be opened when it’s raining.

Picture Windows

A picture window is a large pane of glass that will not open, these are great for a letting in natural light.

Skylight Windows

Skylights can run a bit expensive because of the complexity of their installation. Skylights are great for letting in natural light.

These are just a few of the many types of windows that Blackstone Exteriors carries. To discuss your options and figure out what type of window will be best for your house, call us today for a free estimate!
