What Causes Asphalt Shingle Rippling?

Oftentimes, a wavy roof is more than just a cosmetic problem. It could indicate other problems that may not be easily noticed by the untrained eye. If you think your asphalt shingles look wavy, you should check the possible causes so you’ll know what steps to take.

Here are some of the most common reasons behind asphalt shingle rippling.

Poor Ventilation

Insufficient or blocked venting causes moisture to condensate on the underside of the decking boards. Over time, this moisture seeps through, which leads to rippling or buckling shingles. To solve this problem, call an expert who can help improve your attic ventilation.

Wind Damage

When shingles have been ruffled by high winds, they are more likely to have a rippled appearance. If there is no creasing or cracking on the shingles, your roofing contractor can smooth them down. Adhesive can also be reapplied to hold them in place. However, if the shingles have creased or cracked, you’ll need to replace them.

Re-Roofing Issues

This problem occurs when a roofer installs new shingles directly over the old ones instead of removing the old shingles first. It could lead to moisture accumulation under and within the old shingles, causing damage to the underside of the new shingles. Once this moisture is absorbed by the new shingles over time, they will start to ripple or curl. You may need to call a roofing contractor to redo the installation.

Leaks

Typically, leaks happen when the attic has been neglected for a long time. You should consult a roofing expert right away before leaks penetrate the shingles and pool up on the underlayment. If left unaddressed, the trapped moisture can cause the shingles to warp and look rippled.
