The Signs of a Damaged Roof

Nebraska’s weather can be extremely tough on your roof. Wind, rain, and snow take their toll every year, but it is important to stay on top of your roof’s health. It is recommended that you inspect your roof every spring and fall for any weather related damage. A damaged roof can lead to serious issues if not addressed quickly. What exactly should you be looking for when you inspect your roof? Inspect the exterior for: 1. Loose Shingle Granules These will look like sand grains and is a sign of advanced wear on your roof. 2. Loose Material Around Chimneys Look for lose material or wear around chimneys, vents and pipes. Make sure there are no gaps where water can penetrate. 3. Damaged Shingles You are looking for cracked, curled, torn, bald, or missing shingles. 4. Signs of Moisture Check for signs of moisture, mold, or rot, especially on the lowest parts of your roof where water may pool. 5. Examine Drainage System Check to make sure that all gutters and downspouts are securely attached and unobstructed. In addition to checking the exterior, go into your attic and check for: 1. Sagging Spots 2. Signs of Water Damage or Leaking This could be mold or water damaged spots on the attic ceiling or floor. 3. Dark Spots or Trails This may show the path in which water is entering your home. 4. Sunlight If you see sunlight shining through your roof, call an expert. If your roof is damaged in a storm and water enters your home, mold can begin growing within 24 hours.
