Selecting Windows: Location and Size

Windows provide natural lighting, heat and many other benefits for you and your family. Getting the proper sizes and dimensions for windows in specific rooms can be crucial for both aesthetics and energy efficiency. Knowing where to place them is also key to having a well-lit home without compromising temperature factors. How important is the size and location of windows to a home? Having trouble deciding on replacement windows?

Window Orientation

Knowing where to place your windows is key in having an energy-efficient home. When it comes to heat retention in winter, placing larger windows in areas of the house that receive significant amounts of sunlight during the day will help keep your home toasty and comfortable. In the same scenario, placing smaller windows in the part of the house that receives little to no amounts of direct sunlight keeps the heat retained throughout the day from escaping.

How about for the other seasons, like summertime? In this scenario, placing larger windows in areas that garner significant amounts of sunlight can cause rooms to be stiflingly hot during the day, especially in the afternoons. In this case, adjusting the size of the windows to adapt to the general layout of your home, as well as proper window and roof angling, can help make it effective for any season.

Thermal Mass

Thermal mass refers to a material’s ability to absorb heat energy. Installing windows with large surfaces of clear glass is optimal for homes with higher levels of thermal mass, like structures built with bricks and concrete, while homes with lesser thermal masses (built with lightweight materials like timber and logs) should have smaller windows composed of ordinary glass. Construction materials like timber retain less heat due to their lower density while bricks, tiles, concrete and clay retain more heat due to their composition.
