How Do Professionals Repair Rusted Gutters?

Rust can leave holes in nearly every part of a gutter system and ultimately render it useless if not fixed in time. While there is more than one way to fix rusted gutters, having them done professionally yields durable and lasting results.

Inspection

A gutter professional will come over and inspect all parts of the gutters, including troughs, fasteners, and joints. Surrounding components, such as the roof fascia (the board on which the gutters are attached), will also be inspected. Factors that dictate the scope of the repair work include:

  • Extent of rusting. Rust on the gutters can be as minor as some spots in select areas, which means removing them will be a preventative measure. They could also affect nearly all parts, which means it could require a lot of work, or even replacing sections of the gutters.

  • Holes. If the rust has already formed holes, then it’s too late to sand these areas and segments will need to be replaced. Some may recommend patching the holes using sealant or resin, but these are temporary fixes. Replacing the affected sections will help ensure long-term performance.

  • Surrounding components. Roofers attach the gutters to the fascia, the vertically-oriented boards that cover the rafter tails. Gutter professionals will have to make sure that these components are in good condition; otherwise, any kind of repair work wouldn’t last long.

Gutter Repairs

Professional gutter repairs begin with a thorough cleaning of the gutters. In addition to removing leaves and debris that may block areas that require repair, it also helps remove standing water in the gutters. Areas for repair will then be marked, then cut or sanded as appropriate. In case sections are to be removed, the gutter professional will first inspect the fascia and perform repairs as needed. Gutter brackets will then be installed before the new sections are attached and sealed at the joints.

The gutter professional may test the newly-repaired gutters by spraying water on the roof. To protect against rust, the gutter professional may apply a new coat of paint to the entire gutter system. It also helps the gutters match the rest of the exterior. Once the repairs are completed, the homeowner may receive tips on maintenance, as well as recommendations on how to better protect the gutters, like installing a gutter protection system.
