Common Myths About Roofing Wind Damage

Despite wind damage being one of the most common types of roofing damage, myths about it persist. Today, we debunk some of the most common myths about wind roofing damage.

MYTH: Wind Damage Only Happens During Storms

While storms cause significant damage to roofs, wind damage can happen even on a clear day. This is why many homeowners tend to inspect their roofs only after storms and overlook less-obvious signs of wind damage. A wind-damaged asphalt shingle roof, for example, would have horizontal creases about an inch below the edge of the shingle right above it. These creases happen when wind lifts the shingles by the edges and folds it. Along with the creases, you may also find a significant amount of loose granules on the rooftop and in the gutter troughs.

Most of today’s asphalt shingle products have adhesives pre-applied on the underside of the shingles that help prevent damage caused by wind lift. This adhesive cures under exposure to heat from the sun a few days after a roof replacement, which means the roof may be at greater risk of wind damage during this period.

MYTH: It’s Okay to Delay Wind Damage Repair

Wind damage doesn’t always look severe, but this doesn’t mean you can delay roof repair. Roofs are constantly exposed to the elements. Therefore, damage to the roof will only get worse over time. The longer repairs are delayed, the higher the potential repair costs will be. Talk to your insurance provider if you’re unsure whether the company provides coverage for such kinds of wind damage. Your roofing contractor can perform a thorough inspection and determine if the damage is caused by normal wear or by strong winds.

MYTH: A Wind-Damaged Roof Must Be Replaced

Replacing a wind-damaged roof should only be considered if it is beyond repair. Most types of wind damage can be fixed with shingle replacement and framing reinforcement. If your roof is rated for wind resistance, it may be covered by your warranty coverage if the damage is caused by winds higher than what the roof is rated for.
