Basics of Roof Ventilation – Blackstone Exteriors

Roof ventilation can do so much for your home, especially if it’s done correctly. Regardless if you live in a region with hot, cold or mixed climates, you can definitely benefit from adding this feature to your home.

Why You Should Install a Roof Vent

Roof venting offers several advantages. It can protect your roof from structural problems and contribute to a cleaner indoor environment. Roof ventilation keeps the attic cool and dry. Warm, moist air is typically produced through different household activities like taking showers and doing laundry. This warm, moist air can rise from your living spaces to your attic, where the air is usually cooler.

The meeting of warm, moist and cooler air results in condensation – which means that the surrounding framing members and insulation can potentially get wet. When moisture doesn’t dry, mold can grow on the roof rafters and insulation. This can potentially lead to roof damage and health hazards.

What Makes Up an Ideal Vent System?

Ask a roofing repair contractor about the ideal vent system, and the person will likely recommend a configuration that will allow for a sufficient amount of ventilation, which is 1 square foot per 300 square feet of attic area.

To meet this recommendation, a vent system should have baffles, soffit vents and ridge vents. When these vents work together, the entire vent system gains the capacity to facilitate continuous airflow. Fresh air is introduced into the attic as warm, moist air is released to the outside.
