A Beginner’s Guide to the Roofing Soffit

A roofing system is composed of many components, but most people are only familiar with the shingles, flashing and, perhaps, the underlayment. However, homeowners must still be aware of the less prominent parts of the roof, including the soffit.

What Is the Roof Soffit?

A roof’s soffit is found only on roofs with eaves or overhanging parts. The soffit is the area of the roof starting from the edge of the overhanging part to the wall of your home. While some roofs have open soffits, most have panels made from either wood, vinyl, or metal.

A Multipurpose Roof Component

A soffit and its panels serve multiple functions. First, the panels keep wind and debris from getting under the roof eaves. The panels also hide the underside of the roof, giving it a clean look. Roof replacement experts say that the soffit also serves as an outlet for roof and attic ventilation. In rare cases, the soffit is also where a downspout is found (usually for concealed gutter systems).

Common Soffit Problems

Like other exposed parts of the roof, a soffit is vulnerable to some external factors. Strong winds, humidity and moisture cause constant wear and tear. In some cases, rodents and pests chew through the panels to get inside the roof or attic. For soffits that double as air outlets, debris buildup can also clog the attic vents.

Soffit Maintenance

Fortunately, keeping the soffit problem free is easy. As long as you have your roof inspected by roofing on a regular basis, you shouldn’t have to worry about serious soffit issues for months or even years.
