4 Ways Bad Roofing Contractors Cut Corners

4 Ways Bad Roofing Contractors Cut Corners

Whether you’re repairing or replacing your old roof, any roofing project is a significant investment for any homeowner to undertake. With that in mind, it’s understandable if you want the job done properly. Unfortunately, there are some less than reputable contractors out there who may cut corners to finish the project faster.

In this post, new construction builders Blackstone Exteriors reveal the five different ways less than reputable contractors cut corners during a roofing project.

  • Using Second Grade Shingles – To cut back on costs, a bad contractor may use second grade shingles during your roofing project. Unfortunately, the reason why these shingles are cost effective options is because they have factory defects. If they’re installed in your home, it could lead to the shingle being easily blown off by the wind or moisture infiltration can set in your roof almost immediately.
  • Using Ridge Caps That Don’t Match the Shingles – Ridge caps are installed in your roof as additional protection against leaks. When it comes to the ridge caps, however, many roofing companies tend to cut corners by installing a ridge cap whose lifespan doesn’t match your roof’s. Unfortunately for the homeowner, once this happens, the manufacturer has the right to refuse to warrant your shingles due to the mismatch in the system.
  • Not Using Enough Nails – Another way a bad roofing repair contractor can cut corners on your roofing project is by not using enough nails. While this may not sound like much of a problem, the inadequate amount of nails leaves your shingles vulnerable to wind uplift and blow-off. This can result in leaks in your home, especially during a storm.
  • Improper Ice and Water Shield Installation – According to building codes, the ice and water shields should be installed 24 inches away from your exterior wall. However, this is the minimum requirement and to cut corners and save money, some roofing companies will do this bare minimum, which may prove itself inadequate in protecting your roofing system.
