4 FAQs About Energy-Efficient Windows

A standard element of a modern, high-performance home or building is energy-efficient windows. It is quite easy to choose the style, color and size of windows you want for your interior space. Finding the most energy-efficient window, however, is not exactly a piece of cake. It is important to understand the components of a high-quality, energy-efficient window.

1. What Is Insulated Glass?

An insulated glass unit (IGU) consists of two or more panes of glass. It is designed to increase the thermal efficiency of homes by keeping them cozy and warm in the winter and cooler in the summer. Other benefits of IGUs include saving energy, reducing condensation and reducing outdoor noise.

2. What Is a Gas-Filled Window?

Filling the space between the panes with a noble gas like argon or krypton will effectively seal an IGU unit. It also improves its performance by providing insulation and reducing heat gain and loss.

3. What Is Low-E Glass?

Low-emittance (Low-E) glass of an energy-efficient window is coated with a thin, clear film material that minimizes the transmission of ultraviolet (UV) light from outside to inside. Low-E glass further enhances the thermal efficiency of the window by cutting glare and preventing damage to interior furnishings.

4. What Is the Difference Between R-Value and U-Value?

R-value is commonly cited in wall and ceiling insulation discussions, but since it does not translate well to windows, the term U-value is used instead. Keep in mind that the higher the R-value, the better insulated walls and ceilings are, whereas the lower the U-value, the better the window is at keeping heat and cold out.
